LMAC’s
2006 ANNUAL REPORT
2006
was a very busy and productive year for LMAC.
The LMAC grant funded a variety of programs impacting all of
Livingston’s residents. A summary
of some of the LMAC sponsored programs follow.
COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
- Printed
the Just Say News during April Alcohol Awareness Month,
October Red Ribbon Week and December in the West Essex Tribune.
- Co-sponsored
the Reflect on This
weekly column in the West Essex
Tribune with the YMCA of West Essex.
- Sponsored
a Smoke-free Weekend during the November Great American Smoke-out.
- Coordinated,
sponsored and funded the annual Red Ribbon Week campaign to increase
awareness of drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention strategies.
Activities included the distribution of over 10,000 lapel ribbons to
all students, parents and participating businesses, as well as door bows to
homes, businesses and all school and municipal buildings.
- Sponsored
annual April Alcohol Awareness Month activities and Townhall
Alcohol Awareness Meeting.
- Provided
special gifts for the Intergenerational
Prom.
- Sponsored
the annual National Family Eats Together campaign in cooperation with
Applegate Farms. Held
dessert social for over 200 Livingston residents at the Community/Senior
Center.
YOUTH PREVENTION AND SCHOOL-BASED PROGRAMS
- Funded
Listen to Children program.
This intergenerational program trains senior citizens to “listen”
to elementary and middle school students, one-on-one, at the child’s
school, during school hours, one day a week.
This program is also supported by the Livingston Board of Education,
The United Way of North Essex, PT Council, CIT Group and coordinated by
Jewish Family Service of MetroWest. This
program continues to be a model program for the state of New Jersey.
- Funded
the middle school Natural Helpers program and training
retreat.
- Presented
two $750 Humanitarian Awards at the Livingston High School Senior
Awards Night and two $750 Going the
Extra Mile scholarships.
- Provided
shirts for the D.A.R.E. program at Aquinas Academy.
- Funded
presentations to seventh and eighth graders during Red Ribbon and Violence
Prevention Weeks.
- Provided
speakers and programs at Livingston High School including The Drunk Driving
Simulator Safety VW Beetle for seniors and a virtual driving machine for
sophomores, Mykee Fowlin for freshman and recovering students from Day Top
and High Focus for health classes. John
Morello presented DIRT to all juniors during March testing.
- Funded
the training programs for the 3rd, 4th, 5th,
and 6th grade Leaders Program under the direction of the Livingston
Youth and Community Services (LYCS).
Over 500 youth are members of this outstanding prevention program
along with the Peer Leaders programs for students in grades 7 through 12. LMAC also fully funds the high school Peer to Peer
program. All of these programs
are run under the outstanding guidance of LYCS director, Steven Gegner.
- Provided
Sadecky’s Puppets during Red Ribbon Week in all Livingston public
and private elementary schools.
PARENT/COMMUNITY
PREVENTION EDUCATION PROGRAMS
- Co-Sponsored
a town-wide program attended by over 450 adults featuring Rosalind Wiseman
during Red Ribbon Week on Surviving
the Hive.
- Presented
an evening spring program with Lauren Hyman for over 150 parents and
co-sponsored Ms. Hyman attending all fifth grades throughout the district
for student and faculty training.
- Partnered
with the Livingston Board of Education and P-T Council with additional
funding from United Way of North Essex to continue Social and Emotional
Learning in the elementary and middle schools.
- Purchased
materials for Livingston Parents in Self Help Support Group.
- Promoted
Safe Homes.
